Mathematics
Welcome to the Mathematics Department
At JHS 157 we believe that mathematics is more than numbers and equations, it's a powerful tool for understanding the world, solving problems, and building confidence. Our dedicated math team is committed to nurturing every student’s curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking through engaging lessons and supportive instruction.
📘 Algebra for All Curriculum
Our Algebra for All initiative ensures that every student is empowered to succeed in mathematics from sixth through eighth grade. Aligned with the New York State Next Generation Mathematics Standards, our curriculum is designed to build strong foundations, foster deep understanding, and prepare students for high school and beyond.
Grade 6: Building the Basics
Students begin their algebra journey by exploring:
- Variables, expressions, and equations
- Hands-on activities and real-world math scenarios
- Problem-solving strategies that promote mathematical fluency
This foundational year sets the stage for confident and capable learners.
Grade 7: Making Connections
In seventh grade, students dive deeper into:
- Linear equations and inequalities
- Introduction to functions and graphing
- Math in everyday life and connecting classroom concepts to real-world applications
Our goal is to make algebra meaningful and relevant, sparking curiosity and engagement.
Grade 8: Mastering Algebra
By eighth grade, students are ready to tackle more advanced topics:
- Systems of equations and quadratic expressions
- Exponential functions and deeper function analysis
- Rigorous problem sets that challenge and inspire
This year culminates in preparation for the Algebra 1 Regents exam, a key milestone in each student’s academic journey.
Our Commitment
We believe that every child can succeed in math with the right support and opportunities. Through our Algebra for All curriculum, we ensure:
- Equitable access to high-quality instruction
- A growth mindset approach that celebrates effort and progress
- Readiness for high school mathematics and lifelong learning
Ultimately, our goal is for all students to be prepared to take the Algebra 1 Regents exam by the end of eighth grade. This exam serves as a benchmark for assessing students’ mastery of algebraic concepts and their readiness for high school mathematics coursework.

What is SOLVE?
SOLVE is a problem-solving strategy suggested by The National Training Network that students can use to help carry out and evaluate a plan to solve multi-step, real-world problems in math.

What is The Close Reading Strategy in Mathematics?
Teachers and students are using the Close Reading Strategy in the mathematics classrooms to enhance students’ problem-solving skills by promoting a structured approach to understanding problems. This method involves thoroughly analyzing the problem statement, identifying key details, and breaking the problem down into manageable parts. Close Reading encourage students to slow down, engage with the text differently, and reflect on the content they read. This deliberate process ensures a comprehensive understanding before attempting a solution, leading to more effective and accurate problem-solving.
